Polymer Technology

NeuroNexus’ polymer technology rose out of the need for devices for use in brain structures deeper than those practically accessed by silicon arrays (i.e. deeper than about 1cm). These devices are comprised of metal conductors sandwiched between insulating polymer layers (polyimide or parylene).  Metal electrode sites (gold, iridium or platinum) and bond pads (gold) contact the underlying leads through etched apertures.  Resulting structures are mechanically robust, yet very flexible.

NeuroNexus polymer technology is used to create flexible ribbon cables that can be paired with silicon arrays in a hybrid structure that can be placed chronically into deep brain through a cannula, as well as in polymer-based arrays that can be paired with a long, stiff carrier to reach deep brain in acute preparations.  The latter device, the “AXIAL” array, has been developed in collaboration with FHC, Inc. (www.fh-co.com).

Typical polymer device thickness is 20 microns.  Using innovative assembly techniques, polymer electrode arrays can be achieved in lengths up to 280mm.  As with NeuroNexus’ silicon technology, a custom polymer design, fabrication and packaging service is available for investigators with unique requirements.
