Chronic Moderate Noise Induces Central Auditory Hyperexcitability
“Long-Term Moderate-Level Noise Exposure Caused Hyperexcitability in the Central Auditory System”, a study led by Wei Sun team reveals that long-term moderate noise exposure (84 dB SPL, 8 hrs/day) increases auditory sensitivity and hyperexcitability in the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex, even without cochlear damage!
The researchers used NeuroNexus A1x16-10mm-100-177 microelectrode arrays to perform multiunit and local field potential recordings. These high-density electrode arrays enabled precise laminar recordings, which facilitated current source density CSD analysis to differentiate thalamocortical vs. intracortical contributions to neural hyperactivity.
