XDAQ Acquisition Systems

Hardware
XDAQ is the data acquisition system of the X-Series platform: it acquires X-Series headstages over micro-HDMI at 30 kHz and 16 bits, in record and record-and-stimulate modes and with Neuropixels probes live, and synchronizes them with its analog, digital, video and optogenetic GPIO; it is engineered and manufactured by Kontex and commercialized by NeuroNexus.

Three models share the electronics and differ in which ports and options they include.

ALL-IN-ONE records 1,024 channels and adds synchronized video and four optogenetic channels, at 3.05 kg on DC power; it is the system for a rig that does not move. ONE+ records 512 channels with the same throughput and GPIO, without video and optogenetics, at 2.81 kg. CORE2 records 512 channels on half the throughput — fewer headstages streaming at once, not lower capacity — at 900 g on USB-C power, so it moves to a shared microscope or a surgical suite. All three connect to the host computer over Thunderbolt 3, with USB3 and Ethernet available, and provide 8 analog in, 8 analog out and 32 digital I/O (7, 7 and 31 on CORE2). Latency to the software is about 10 ms.

The choice between the models is seldom channel count. It is whether the rig travels, whether video or optogenetics must be synchronized with the neural data, and how many headstages run at once. Every model is an instrument in Radiens: Allego provides instrument control and live signal quality, and record-and-stimulate mode pairs with the X-Series stim-record headstages for closed-loop protocols. The X-Series XDAQ overview and the three XDAQ manuals cover setup.
