A-Series Probes (Buzsaki)

Hardware
A Buzsáki-layout probe staggers closely spaced sites near the edges of the tip segment of each shank, so neighboring sites record overlapping populations of neurons and a spike sorter separates units by the amplitude pattern across them.

The layout was designed for recording many units from one penetration, in the hippocampal pyramidal layers in particular, and it is the layout for replay and spatial-navigation work. Catalog designs have 16 to 256 sites on 1 to 8 shanks, 1.5 to 15 mm long, with sites of 92 to 177 µm² on 15 or 50 µm silicon; iridium is the standard site metal. The probes are packaged on the A-Series, CM and Hybrid series, and spike sorting is where the layout pays: the same neuron is recorded on several sites at once, which is the information the sorter uses.

Records and stimulates. Research use only.
